May 28, 2018 - Ample Team


We messed up. We, the white folks at Ample, thought we were being respectful by holding off on incorporating the review functionality for BIPOC inclusivity until we had better feedback from those communities. That functionality had been written, but omitted from Ample, after advisement from a POC whom [in retrospect] we tokenized. We also fell dramatically short of continued and thorough outreach into these communities when seeking dialogue and feedback. We let our allying become performative in our fear of messing up.

It was generously brought to our attention that reviews without this axis of information are useless to BIPOC, as race strongly affects experiences with businesses and service providers. We are sorry this had to be reiterated, and that we didn’t ally adequately prior to launch. We were reminded it is more important to help dismantle white supremacy than it is to be perfect in our efforts.

We’ve hustled to get this functionality rolled out immediately. We are still engaging in conversation about how to better collaborate and partner with BIPOC communities. Not least so we can assure that the wording, tags, and tool tips are what best serve— be aware these things might change as we continue this dialogue. But as of right now, this is available, with our promise that it will only improve.

(A reminder to non-BIPOC folks: It is best practice to leave a rating unfilled if you do not know how an establishment performs in a certain rating area. A blank rating is simply not used in an establishment’s calculated score.)
